If you are a fan of banana cakes, you probably already know about the famous bakery located in JB close to the customs called Hiap Joo Bakery, well known for their snakingly long queues. I’ve been wanting to try their banana cakes and was so excited to get my hands on it. I went into JB once before this occasion, but did not notice that their closing hours is about 5pm. This time round, we headed right for the bakery first thing after arrival in case they are sold out early.
There was already a long queue when we arrived, but thankfully it was still manageable. I probably only waited for less than 30 minutes which is within my limit.
Each box of banana cake costs 12rm (SGD 4~) and there are 10 pieces. There are also other pastries like Coffee cake and freshly baked bread. We only bought 5 boxes of banana cake as that is their signature flavour. Perhaps we’ll try out the rest next time!
Our batch of banana cakes were freshly baked out of the oven and it was piping hot. The staff told us to keep the box lid open until the cakes were completely cooled so we went to a nearby cafe to rest after our purchase.
I tried 1 piece when it was still very hot and the cakes were more crumbly, which is quite normal. Just wanted to taste the difference. The cooled version is actually more moist and tastier but I guess it depends on individual preference!
I think the banana cakes were really delicious! I haven’t tried enough versions to really compare but this is one of the best comfort food for breakfast. And I was really glad to queue for it! I heard that Singapore is selling on group buy for $6.80 if you don’t want to travel to JB just to get it.
