Have you tried dining in the dark? And how dark is “dark”?
Read on to find out how’s my experience dining in the dark!
When we stepped in, we were quite impressed with the restaurant interior, which was quite romantic with colour-changing lights like blue, red and green.
Before the start of the meal, we had drinks and an appetiser at the pre-dining lounge. And this was actually the only dish that we could see with our eyes. I have to say, the mocktail and cocktail we had were pretty good too.
The mocktail had bubbles on it while the cocktail had fire (not in photo), which were quite aesthetically pleasing, especially for the camera. I’m not usually a great fan of mocktails, but this had a very pleasantly sweet and tangy flavour that opened up my appetite.
After we enjoyed our drinks, we were ushered to the 2nd level which is the main dining area. We had to keep our belongings, mobile phone and even smartwatches into the locker. Basically anything that emits light cannot be brought in. The visually-impaired staff led us to form a ‘Choo choo train’ and brought all of us to the dining area.
The experience includes a 3-course meal (starter, mains and dessert) with 4 dishes each. In case you’re wondering, they make the dining experience much easier by placing the food into 4 bowls and our only utensils were fork or spoon (no knives for safety)!
You can either spend the time knowing more about each other (if it’s a romantic date). But since my dining partner was my cousin, we spent a lot of time actually analysing the ingredients of each dish instead. Honestly the harder part was trying to remember all the ingredients that we’ve guessed for all 12 dishes. No doubt it was really a really fun challenge for us.
I won’t be giving spoilers for the dishes, so you get to experience it fully for yourself! After the meal, you will be given a questionnaire to write down the ingredients that you manage to guess. The host will then show you the name and pictures of the dishes you’ve eaten to see how many you got them correct!
After this experience, I realised how much I might have neglected the true taste of a dish as I became too fixated on the aesthetics and exterior of the food on a regular basis.
The staff also told me that my taste buds were above average as I managed to guess some ingredients that were not so commonly guessed by others. YAY.
This restaurant is quite meaningful as you get to experience how is it like to be visually impaired/ blind, and it’s nice to know that these people get an opportunity in life as well.
