Review | 5 reasons why I love Virgin Active gym

Amidst my boxing journey, I have decided to be a “pilates girl” and embarked on something new recently. I chanced upon Virgin Active at Tanjong Pagar after missing an event that had a last-minute time change. Not wanting to waste the afternoon time slot that I have initially set aside, I just went for a free trial at the gym to past time and I fell in love with the gym. And nope it’s not sponsored. (I PAID FOR EVERYTHING and I am spending really a lot on my monthly fitness)

Honestly, it is a little unusual for me to sign up for any fitness package that is not in the east because this lazy-arse wouldn’t travel far for any workouts.

But I honestly think that it’s perfect for me since I go to Tanjong Pagar/ Telok Ayer/ Chinatown areas at least once a week for tastings or events. And I could just stay there for half a day before my next destination. So my typical gym day goes like that – group class e.g. pilates, rest, gym training, lunch by the pool and doing my work there after that.

So here are the 5 main reasons:

Great facilities:

What sets this gym apart was the crazy amount of facilities which I am going to share in a bit. (ok to be fair, I didn’t visit enough gyms to make a good comparison), but they have a salt relaxation room, cold plunge/ steam room, really big shower and locker facilities plus a REALLY nice swimming pool?! It’s legit nice because it’s Sofitel’s swimming pool, I’m like “no wonder la…” I am always on a look out for cafes to do my work, but I think it’s pretty chill by the pool as well, and there’s a huge variety of food & drinks around the area for takeaway.

I love how they provide towels, shampoo, shower gel so I can minimise the things that I need to bring. I definitely don’t want to pack a bunch of things and then lug it to my next event. In fact, they even provide workout attires if you need (but I prefer using mine).

Near the MRT:

It’s righttttt above Tanjong Pagar MRT, need I say more? I don’t need that extra 10-15min workout to walk to the gym.

Spacious:

I don’t know if it’s just me but I am rather intimidated when the gyms are so packed. I’ve walked past gyms in the Central Area where there’s literally someone beside/ in front/ behind you across 2 metres. And that honestly scares the shit outta me because I need my space and peace when I work out. Some gyms even face the treadmills to the streets so everyone can look at you. The place is so huge and I usually visit in the non-peak timings so there’s not much people :’)

Classes Variety:

I’ve been stuck to boxing classes for about a year (a couple of months to be exact due to my 6-months glutes injury). I loved it, and I still do. But having to try different fitness classes excite me as well. Virgin Active has quite a huge variety of classes ranging from Pilates, Yoga, Bodypump, Spin and more. I have tried Reformer Pilates – Align for the first time and I enjoyed it!

Personal training:

One reason for joining a gym membership is also to engage in a personal trainer to guide me through my gymming journey. As I was injured for a good 6 months previously, and also not familiar with gym equipment in general, I felt a strong need to get a trainer to assist me (At least for a start). My PT is Vanessa and she’s really friendly and meticulous in planning out a workout and diet routine for me. I generally feel very anxious stepping into a gym not knowing how to operate some of the machines and worrying at the back of my head whether I am doing the workouts correctly. So far I had 1 intro session + 1 PT session and things have been great for me.

Can’t wait to be back again!
