It’s been about 4 months since I’ve joined Virgin Active and while I was initially in a dilemma whether to engage a personal trainer (PT) for my gym sessions (because sadly it’s not cheap), I absolutely did not regret a single bit and here are some reasons why YOU SHOULD GET YOURSELF A PERSONAL TRAINER.
My friends around me have asked me how much I spend on fitness-related stuff in a month and here’s my breakdown:
– Boxing class at Legends Fight Sports: $200
– Gym membership (1 credit/ week): $140
– PT: $200-400
1. Prevent injuries
I had glutes injury for more than half a year and it was a traumatic experience as I did not know when I could possibly recover. I’ve also heard of horror stories of getting injured in the gym when you use the equipment wrongly and I do not want to take the risk again. Having a PT can ensure that you can learn the right postures while working out.
2. Build your confidence (Especially for new gym users)
I was initially quite intimidated in the gym as I was unsure of how to use the equipment. Yes I am afraid of judgment. But even looking up for videos on TikTok didn’t really help as I was completely clueless. Having a PT allowed me to feel comfortable trying out different equipment around the gym and build my confidence gradually.
3. Keep track of your workout progress
This is not really relevant for me as I am quite diligent in terms of keeping the motivation of working out (in fact I am probably lowkey addicted). But for those who need someone around them to keep track of their diet and workout routine, a personal trainer would be really useful especially if you have very specific goals to attain.
4. Personalised training
If you’re putting in the effort at the gym but not seeing the weight loss or muscle gains you want, you might be doing the wrong exercises. A personal trainer can help by assessing your fitness goals and creating a targeted workout routine that’s better suited to your needs, boosting your efficiency and results.
My personal training experience so far…
Just wanted to share that my personal trainer at the Tanjong Pagar Branch is Vanessa Dolores Chan (96673937). She’s amazing – super friendly and professional! From day one, she’s been incredibly observant, catching even my small mistakes (she really knows her stuff). She’s also super patient and approachable. When I started, she even had me send photos of my meals so she could check if I was getting enough protein and other nutrients.
In fact, she was the one who suggested Chobani Greek yogurt when she noticed I was eating a brand that didn’t provide enough protein. Now, I’m more mindful of my dietary needs, though I’ve stopped sending her updates as I got a bit lazy. I also asked her to show me how to use most of the gym equipment to build my confidence since I was hesitant to try it on my own.
It’s probably one of the best decisions I’ve made this year!
