Review | Wa En at Jewel Changi Airport | Wagyu Yakiniku BBQ

I had the opportunity to try out this restaurant with my family for a belated birthday celebration which I have looked forward to for quite some time. If you’re looking for a premium yakiniku joint, you gotta check out Wa-En Wagyu Yakiniku flagship restaurant. They made it into the Michelin guide not once, but twice in 2016 and 2017! This place has been serving up mouthwatering Wagyu from Miyazaki prefecture in Japan for over a decade in Hong Kong. And they have now opened their very first outlet in Jewel Changi Airport. They’ve got the Wa-En Bar too. It’s the perfect spot to unwind with an impressive selection of wines, Japanese whiskeys, and craft cocktails.

You can pick from the $88/ premium course or $128/ deluxe course per person. But my family wanted to splurge a little more for a better cut and quality so here we are.

Deluxe Course Set | $128 per pax

The course includes appetisers, yakiniku platters, noodles/ rice and an ice-cream dessert. Oh, and you have to order minimum of 2 sets per course, so we had 3 sets to share for 4 pax in total.

To be honest, the portion was quite generous that we’re already close to being full before finishing the 5 appetiser dishes (small appetite), I particularly enjoyed the Seared Miyazaki Marbled Wagyu Sushi and Japanese Fruit Tomato with Shiquasa Jelly. The wagyu sushi was so tender and soft you can almost glide the entire beef into your mouth. Not to mention, it was such a huge piece which made me felt very satiated before the main course even started. The tomato appetiser was very refreshing and sour (in a good way for me), lives up to its appetiser name for real.

Here’s the wagyu yakiniku platter! The portion shown here is portioned for 3 pax already – which includes Deluxe Miyazaki Marbled Wagyu Karubi, Miyazaki A4-A5 Wagyu Sirloin, Miyazaki Thin-sliced Wagyu Karubi (Sukiyaki style), Premium Australian Thick-cut Wagyu Beef Tongue, Kagoshima Pork Belly, Chicken Thigh and Fresh Lettuce.

Honestly, I am not exactly sure which is which, but overall the beef had really good standards. Perhaps not comparable to Wagyu beef from Japan, but I haven’t had such quality meat in Singapore for quite some time so I was really enjoying it. If I had to just pick one, I really like the Sukiyaki style as I prefer thin cuts for beef. But just check out the detailed marbling of the karubi, I was already salivating at the sight of it.

My brother actually enjoyed the chicken thigh the most, to my huge surprise. But I gotta give it to him after taking a bite. It was so tender and juicy, and I would have ate more if not my limited stomach space which has already reserved for all the wagyu.

By the time the noodles/rice were served, we were already beyond full and couldn’t stuff anymore food. So we had to do takeaway instead. You can pick from 1 of these for each course set: Mini Wagyu Steak Jyu, Mini Morioka Cold Noodles, Mini Wagyu Suji Inaniwa Udon, or Mini Wagyu Suji Nikomi with Rice.

For dessert, we had Matcha ice-cream! Never a wrong choice!

Overall, I think it’s quite value-for-money considering that it’s not easy to find really good beef yakiniku in Singapore. $128/ pax might sound a little steep but the portion is quite generous unless you are a big eater. And I love the ambience, you can even view the Rain Vortex from your table! Perfect for birthday celebrations or special occasions.

FYI, they require a deposit of $50 if you make a reservation via chope, but weekdays was almost completely empty so I recommend you do a walk-in if you’re afraid to forgo the deposit should there be any unforeseen circumstances.
