Owning my first guinea pigs – Cookie and Muffin

I just owned my very first pair of furry pets – Guinea pigs!

It’s the year of the Pig and I’m happy to own this pair of cute and lovable piggies. It has always been my dream to own a furry pet, but I never got the chance to because my family members have sinus issues and it would cause them problems overtime.

I have been considering to own a furry pet (Dog/ Guinea pigs) after I move out of my parent’s place. My hub’s family has a dog and I know that I have to be spare a lot more time and commitment for a dog, hence I dropped the idea as I felt that I wasn’t ready. Hub on the other hand, love dogs.. So we shall see how it goes after we move to new place.

But for now, I’m so proud to be the owner of these 2 little piggies! Introducing to you…

COOKIE AND MUFFIN!

This is why I’m a baker hahhaaha

Left: Cookie; Right: Muffin

I fell in love at first sight. Knowing that they were brothers, I was even more set on bringing them home. I didn’t want to have issues with guinea pigs not getting used to each other and end up fighting to death.

My parents were slightly reluctant at the start and asked me to delay till I move out in a few more months. But I told them my reasons of wanting to get them asap. They understood and allowed. Yay!

It’s my very first time getting a pet so I was really excited on the way to Pet Lovers Centre. Thank god the piggies weren’t sold away yet. I did up whatever research I could find before making this huge decision because I know getting a pet is a lifetime commitment for them! And I’m totally ready to be a pet mama. I feel that my job and career flexibility also gives me more time to take care of them.

I bought each GP at $180 each, and spent another $350 or so on cage, accessories, hay, vitamin C tablets and bedding. I’ve also calculated that the monthly expenses was about $100 (Just an estimate, but I will be tracking this as well!)

They’re currently at 3 months old and too adorable, really shy and timid animals though. They got better after a few days and were more used to my presence. Right now, they would run to my hands thinking that there’s treats and squeak damn loudly whenever they hear plastic sound. I’ve also started to introduce veggies and I’m taking note of their likes and dislikes.

I love how they each have their own unique personality. Cookie has been a naughty bully so far, but they’re still getting along in general.

As of now, I have been joining a few different Guinea pig discussion groups on FB to learn more about guinea pigs in general. These groups have been really helpful especially when I’m in doubt about something.

I can’t wait to witness their growth and increased interaction in time to come! Hopefully by then, they will be more comfortable in letting me carry and pet them.
