Food Tasting @ The Armoury | Salted Egg Lava

Let’s just say this is one of the more enjoyable food tasting sessions that I have tried 😉

Hidden in a
quiet spot of Beach Road, The Armoury is a great place to chill and enjoy quality
food at affordable prices. I love how the dusty grey brick interior contrasting with a rustic wooden finish gave a very cosy and
warm ambience. It is also personally one of my favourite styles.

From the drinks menu, I noticed three uncommon coffee choices – Hawaiian Latte, Nutella Cafe and Honey Latte. I’ve decided to give the Hawaiian Latte ($6) a try as it was the first time I came across this flavor. It has a subtle sweetness which was very well balanced with the natural taste of the coffee beans. The Hot Chocolate ($6) that my bf ordered was rich and chocolatey as well.

Joon introduced us to their Chef’s Special and we had the Salted Egg Lava Chicken Burger ($20 nett) and Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Hotdog ($19 nett).

I was a little skeptical about the choices at the beginning as the both of us never really fancied the taste of Salted Egg Yolk. For someone who doesn’t have a very pleasant impression of Salted Egg Yolk, I think I’m rather blown away by the flavours, which was not too overwhelming at the same time. Some might prefer the grainy texture of the Salted Egg Yolk sauce, but I opt for a creamier version like this dish.

The chicken was fried to the golden crisp and the combination of the sauce and chicken was indeed well-balanced. It would have been perfectly fine with just the chicken cutlet and fries alone. The toasted burger somehow reminded me of the Macau version of Pork Chop Bun and was a good complement to the chicken.

On the other hand, the Salted Egg Lava Chicken Hotdog fall short in terms of specialty and did not stand out as compared to the Burger. Nevertheless, it is still a good standalone toast for a nice hearty brunch on a Saturday morning. For those who are not a fan of burgers but need a Salted Egg Lava fix, you can still give this a try! The thick toast was still crunchy despite leaving the dish out in the open for a very long time for the sake of photos.

While I am not particularly fascinated, I have nothing to criticize about this dish, it’s only a matter of preference. But I would highly recommended the Chicken Burger as it’s only $1 more, totally worth every single bit of your money.

Between the potato fries and normal fries, bf and I had differing views. Personally, I prefer the potato fries because of its sweetness. On the other hand, the both of them preferred salty fries. Maybe it’s the “Guys Vs. Girls” thing. What do you think?

They also serve other dishes and some of those that caught my eyes are Mentai Ravioli, Watermelon and Pine Nuts Salad, and Unagi Tempura! The names already sound so appetizing and interesting.

Aburi French Toast ($16) consisting of Brioche, Berry Compote, Pomegranate, Beetroot Cream Cheese and Vanilla Ice-cream, is listed as Chef’s recommendation. The caramelized sugar had a crispy nice touch on the outside, while the toast was warm and fluffy inside. The tangy flavours from the fresh berries were a great addition to the sweet fragrant toast as well. The presentation was also nicely executed.

On a side note, I kinda like the mouthfeel of eating Pomegranate seeds!

The Berry Ricotta Hotcake ($19) topped with Fresh Strawberries Raspberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, Yuzu Gel and Cream cheese was a delectable dessert to end off my delicious meal at The Armoury. This is surely a temptation for any berry lovers out there! The hotcake has an exterior which slightly resembles a pie crust, and the cake itself was very moist and fluffy like the texture of a breakfast muffin.

I personally prefer the Aburi French Toast because of the different layers of mouthfeel, from the crunchiness of the caramelized sugar to the creamy sweet vanilla ice cream and fluffy toast.

The Armoury also offers a variety of Craft Beers with unique flavours. The ones that we have tried are Maisel Landbier Lager, Fourpure Lager and Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA.

I am not really into alcohol, much less beer, and I would not really be able to give an accurate judgment on the taste. Bf said that the best among the 3 was Fourpure Lager and he gladly finished it all himself. While I do not have a liking for beer, I just thought that the flavors are really interesting with all the fanciful names, and is worth a try!
