Movie Review: Oblivion (2013)

My boyf & I decided to catch a movie and since we have nothing much to watch, we chose Oblivion. Have no idea what the movie was about but it seemed like an action movie to me.

Here’s a short sypnosis:

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.  Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

The story concept was interesting and very different from typical action movies. The story line came with a few surprising twists here and there later in the show but the start was slightly disappointing due to the fact that it was very draggy. My attention wasn’t entirely captured by the whole movie as most of the time were focused on how Jack and Victoria repaired drones. And I can tell that their lives are pretty much mundane. There was minimal fighting scenes or even anything that will give me adrenaline rush. There was only twist in the story line when he found a survivor with the name of Julia and his memories started to form in his head, and also where he get to find out the truth.

Due to the fact that the entire movie is filmed with the Earth being invaded, there were only some survivors left and thus, in most scenes, there were only a few people moving around. But I find the tower really cool, especially the swimming pool! Can you imagine staying at heights above the ground and have a swimming pool with transparent glass? And the technology they have is super high-tech as well.

Oblivion would definitely be a very nice movie if the front scenes are cut short. Unless you’re able to endure the first half of the show with boring routines. But overall, it is a movie that we didn’t regret watching since it has quite a different concept.

Ratings: 3.5/5 stars
