Being able to indulge in all the CNY delicacies is probably one of the things I look forward to during Chinese New Year! Using only quality ingredients coupled with their improved recipes over the years, Poon Confectionary will surely not disappoint you! They offer a huge range of homemade and freshly baked products ranging from Pineapple Tarts, Love Letters, Assorted Cookies to unique flavours like Peanut Butter Love Letters, Cheese Pineapple Tarts and more. Definitely spoilt for choice!
Did you know? Poon Confectionary was established in 1971 in Malaysia and recently expanded to Singapore. While many traditional bakers switched to automation and machinery in the production of CNY goods, Poon Confectionary maintained the family tradition of hand-making each cookie.
The Cashew Nut Cookies ($15.50) received the most votes in my family, as the cashew added fragrance to the crunchy cookie texture. But my personal favourite would be the Peanut Cookies ($14.90). The melt-in-the-mouth shortbread cookie texture kept me wanting for more, the peanut taste was also just right and not too overwhelming. But it can become quite gelat after a few pieces.
Once again, I love melt-in-the-mouth Pineapple Tarts ($16.90)! Always my favourite! I found the texture just a tad too soft, but this is still subject to individual preference. The tanginess of the pineapple filling was just nice and not too sour like some others I had in the past. If you are feeling adventurous, you could try the Cheese pineapple tarts too!
The Love Letters (Original flavour) ($14.50) reminds me of the HK 蛋卷, except that this is baked into small flat triangles. The HK style is more buttery and flaky, whereas Poon Confectionary’s Love Letters are more crispy with a fragrant egg aftertaste. If you have a sweeter tooth, you might want to try out their unique flavours like Chocolate, Peanut butter and Pandan. I personally prefer original flavours for CNY goodies.
Once I’ve gotten my hands on this tub of Arrowhead Chips ($15.50), I was hooked onto it immediately. At least it feels more guilt-free to be indulging in chips like these.
Salted Egg Chips ($15.50) and Prawn Crackers ($17.50) are alternative comforting snacks to go along with your other CNY snacks if you are looking for something addictive!
